Instagram video ads that feel native
Instagram isn't one ad slot. Your video can show up in Feed, Stories, Reels or Explore, and people behave differently in each one. This guide walks through how Instagram video ads actually work: where they run, which objective to pick, when to boost a post and when to build in Ads Manager, and what kind of creative fits each placement. If you'd rather have someone make the videos, we produce motion graphics ads ready in 24 business hours, starting with a 3 video trial for $97.
Where video ads show up on Instagram
Meta splits Instagram into several placements. For video, these are the ones that matter most:
| Placement | How people get there | What the video needs |
|---|---|---|
| Feed | Scrolling through posts from accounts they follow | A 4:5 or 1:1 frame that still reads at a small size |
| Stories | Tapping from one story to the next | 9:16 vertical with the message clear from frame one |
| Reels | Swiping through full screen creator videos | 9:16 vertical, Reels pacing and a native look |
| Explore | Browsing for something new, in discovery mode | An opening visual that sparks curiosity |
With Advantage+ placements, Meta spreads your budget wherever it expects the best results, so one ad can land in all of them. That's why you want a vertical master plus a Feed cut. For exact specs and the Reels safe zone, see our Instagram Reels ad specs guide.
Boosting a post vs. building in Ads Manager
There are two ways to put money behind a video on Instagram, and they do different jobs.
- Boost from the app: pick a post, Reel or story you already published, set an audience, budget and run time, and you're live. It's a good way to push something that's already doing well organically.
- Ads Manager: full control over objective, placements, audiences, pixel tracking and testing. You can run videos that never appeared on your profile and test several versions side by side.
If you sell online and want to track purchases or sign ups, Ads Manager is where you should be. Boosting works as a side tool, not a full strategy.
Pick the objective before you make the video
Ads Manager asks you to choose a campaign objective: Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App promotion or Sales. That choice changes what your video has to do.
- Awareness: you want people to remember the brand. Show the logo and product early and bring them back.
- Traffic or Leads: you want the tap. Set up a problem and make it obvious what happens after the click.
- Sales: you want the purchase. Product, benefit, visual proof and offer, in that order, no detours.
Settling the goal before the script saves you a lot of wasted tests.
What kind of creative works in each placement
In Reels your ad is up against creators, so it has to feel like part of the feed: fast cuts, big text and one idea per screen. In Stories people tap ahead, so the message needs to land right away and the call to action has to show up before the tap. In Feed, a 4:5 frame takes up more of the screen than a horizontal one. In Explore people are looking for something new, and a striking first frame does the heavy lifting.
On sound: your ad should make sense muted, with on-screen text carrying the idea, and still sound good with audio. As for music, a track you can use in organic posts isn't automatically cleared for ads. Stick to commercially licensed music or the options Meta provides for advertisers.
Organic look vs. polished ad
On Instagram, anything that looks like a TV commercial tends to get scrolled past. What counts is speaking the language of the placement: vertical framing, quick pacing, text you can read at a glance and a message that gets to the point.
Motion graphics fit here because they animate your product, your app screens or your offer in a social style, with no actors or shoots. UGC brings a personal, face to camera feel. A lot of brands run both; our motion graphics vs. UGC ads page breaks down when each one makes sense.
Test your hooks and refresh on time
The opening decides whether someone sticks around. Instead of betting everything on one ad, run several versions with the same body and different hooks, let Ads Manager split delivery and keep the ones that pull their weight. Then try new angles on top of what's already working.
Even a strong ad wears out once the same audience has seen it too many times; we cover that in ad creative fatigue.
To make your videos, all we need is an online brief: product, offer, audience and, if you have them, your logo, photos or screenshots. We write the script, animate it and add the music. You get a vertical 9:16 MP4 ready for Meta and TikTok, in English or Spanish. No calls, and we never ask for access to your account. If we miss the 24 business hour window, you get an extra video free, and if a video doesn't match your brief, we redo it.

FAQ
Where can a video ad run on Instagram?
In Feed, Stories, Reels and Explore, among other placements. With Advantage+ placements, Meta decides where to show it.
Should I boost a post or use Ads Manager?
Boosting is fast and works for giving reach to something you already posted. Ads Manager gives you control over objective, placements, audiences and testing, and it's the better choice if you want to track sales or sign ups.
What format should an Instagram video ad be?
9:16 vertical for Reels and Stories, and 4:5 or 1:1 for Feed. The rest of the requirements live in the Meta Ads Guide.
Can I use any song in an Instagram ad?
No. Music available for organic posts isn't always cleared for ads. Use commercially licensed music or Meta's options for advertisers.
Do you need access to my Instagram or ad account?
No. You buy online, fill out the brief and get your MP4 files through a download link. You or your agency upload them to Ads Manager.
How much does it cost to have my Instagram ads made?
The 3 video trial is a one-time $97 per business, with optional extras: 1:1 and 4:5 versions for $19, revisions for $29 per video and 3 static ads for $47. Monthly plans run from $297 for 10 videos up to $1,797 for 100 videos.
